Electrospinning is a popular technique in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine to create biomimetic scaffolds, and the use of collagen for it’s bio-functionality is well described. However, it has become clear that the commonly used methods for the electrospinning of collagen produce fibres that lack the bio-functionality of native collagen, in part due to the use of harsh solvents, which degrade the collagen’s native structure.

This ProColl white paper presents the application of our single chain collagens for use in electrospinning, without the use of aggressive solvents such as hexafluoroisopropanol. The paper further discusses the issues found by researchers using collagen electrospinning, and how ProColl’s products can offer a solution to these problems by maintaining a native structure throughout the electrospinning process, while avoiding the use of aggressive solvents in favour of benign physiological buffers.
